In a 1960 study, an investigator taped the eyes of three volunteers—one of them severely sleep-deprived—wide open while flashing bright lights at them, blasting loud music into their ears, and administering periodic electric shocks to their legs. They fell sound asleep within 12 minutes (Boese, 2007).
